Wind warning: “What the citizens of
San Francisco and, for that matter, the rest of the nation, don’t understand is that even in
the best locations, wind turbines produce power only about one third of the time”
That’s the point for an op-ed by
Reason’s Jacob Sullum, who argues in Chicago Sun Times “overhauling
manufacturing, transportation and power production to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide may or
may not be justified, but it is properly viewed as a drag on the economy.” It’s
worth a read here.
We attended a Green Jobs event on Capitol Hill
recently that was just brutal. Everyone starts with the assumption that the climate is irreversibly
warming, that human activity is the proven culprit, and that only radical action imposed by the
government will save us.
A friend sent along this notice from the
Institute for Energy Research:
“Americans want a
solution, not another billion-dollar bill,” announced IER president Thomas J. Pyle. “By
speeding up the process for granting leases to drill in previously restricted areas off our coasts,
Congress would not only address rising unemployment, shrinking pensions, and declining tax revenue;
they’d fix it free of charge.”
“Evaluating the costs
of Congress’ plans is especially important to households that no longer have a
paycheck,” Pyle continued, “With the nation’s unemployment rate at 6.1 percent and
likely to continue rising, job loss is rapidly becoming a reality for more and more American
families. Increasing exploration and production of our country’s energy resources would
provide both immediate and long-term employment opportunities.
